Xenon replacement bulbs are micro discharge bulb filled with a mixture of noble gases including xenon gas and mercury metal helitde salt. Xenon bulbs have no filament like a conventional halogen bulb does. The light-ARC is created between two electrodes +/-.The technology was used by the German car makers initially, BMW in the early 90s and by mid 90s Mercedes Benz also started installing the Xenon replacement sizes in some of their models. The D4 preform bulbs is a new type of HID bulbs based on the D2 preform. The main difference is they are mercury free and more environmental friendly. The D4 bulb is interchangeable with the D2, they use lower voltage and a D4 specification ballast is required.
